L.A. SceneJust came back from an extended trip to L.A. doing meetings and seeing a lot of old friends from my music industry days. Can't really say specifically what's cooking as a result of my trip, but it was very productive for the film and I'll be bringing out more details soon.tokyo plastic, hikikomori, adario strange, asian film, japanese hacker Sunday, December 05, 2004
Tokyo Plastic Soundtrack DownloadAmong the best comments we've gotten about the film are from the people who love the music (by Robotstar). Is there a soundtrack available? This is the question I keep hearing. The answer is yes, but not just yet. In the meantime, here's a special treat, a song from the original film score by Robotstar. The song is entitled "Save My Life" featuring Sachiko Kato, and you can download it HERE for free!tokyo plastic, hikikomori, adario strange, asian film, japanese hacker Saturday, November 27, 2004
Hikikomori: Tokyo Plastic PostersI just got the word from our promotion people that we have a new version of posters of the film and they are now for sale for $14.99. What you are seeing is the high-gloss poster that's 24 inches by 18 inches. This is easily my favorite poster. The other one you may have seen on the street or in video stores will probably be available in the near future too. tokyo plastic, hikikomori, adario strange, asian film, japanese hackerMonday, November 22, 2004
Internet Movie Data BaseAs a film guy, IMDB is pretty much my online bible when I'm looking for information about some of my favorite directors. That's why it's so cool to see that my film "Hikikomori: Tokyo Plastic" has now been added to the ranks of film history on their database. And Now... The WorldI wanted to thank all the people who came the New York premiere, and to the following shows these past two weeks. It's good to check off my two favorite cities, Tokyo and New York, on our list of cities the film has played in. Now we're preparing to take the film to a few other major cities, but before we leave there is a chance that we'll have another showing if enough people email us requesting another showing. You can send all mail of that sort to info@bahx.com. Otherwise, we're revving up the engines to take the film on the road. If you are connected to a theater in your city, either U.S. or Europe, and want to book a showing, you can email the same address above and address your letter to Aki. As for the U.S. DVD of the film, it's looking like we'll have something coming out in February -- just a few months away! Stay tuned!tokyo plastic, hikikomori, adario strange, asian film, japanese hacker Sunday, November 07, 2004

Answering Mail/Filming AnecdotesWe've been getting a lot of mail lately asking when the DVD of the "Hikikomori: Tokyo Plastic" is coming out. Answer: Much later, like next year later, after we ride this pony in theaters from here (nyc) to Timbuktu. And yes, on that disc there will be plenty of me blathering on about "oh, it was so hot on that day..." and "I'll never understand why filmmakers are expected to do this that way..." and so on. Actually there is one pretty interesting story that comes to mind right now. While shooting a very crucial scene (let's just say love was in the air) in Shibuya, Tokyo we were accosted by a foreign drug dealer. Really. If you know Shibuya 109 (the holy temple of all Ganguro Girls), we were on the balcony steps on the right. The guy methodically comes up the steps, at first appearing just a little nervous, then upon seeing my nervousness suddenly becoming very self-assured, and goes, "I breaka you camera...!" A cold chill runs through me as I say, "Er..." and then he goes, "You show me what on tape, or I breaka you camera!"![]() Now I'm usually in new york watch-out-for-crazy-people-mode, but several weeks in Japan had lulled me into a false sense of security. I'm drinking beer on the street, jaywalking to the shocked stares of hundreds of Japanese pedestrians, and generally playing with expensive gadgets and money in full view of anyone who cared to look with no worries. I was in heaven. But now i was suddenly rudely awakened from my naive dude-abroad haze, and I was terrified that I was about to get a transpacific beat down right in front of my two beautiful young starlets (who, by the way, at this point both looked like real life versions of the recently stolen Edvard Munch painting The Scream). I instruct the gangster (who looked like one of those cornball thugs in one of Michel Gondry's early French rap videos) to accompany me down the steps. All the while I'm thinking about how I can set the camera equipment down and face him off mano-a-mano and make the Lower East Side of New York proud. After all, at the bottom of the steps I also had about five female crew members with the same Edvard Munch Scream face on, so I was on my own here. I get to the bottom of the steps and out pop two MORE gangsters seemingly out of thin air on each side of me--they had planned this, and really staked us out. Also, while gangster number one was about my size--tall--but maybe something I could handle, his two friends were beefy bouncer types. Hey, I'm not Batman OR Bruce Lee, so I said, "Well now... we're downstairs now... so let's see what footage you wanted to check out...!" With my best please-don't-embarass-me-in-Tokyo cheesy grin on. Gangster number one looks at the video monitor viewing the footage we just shot and after a couple nerve wracking minutes of me running the footage back and forth for them, they all just abruptly disappear. As luck would have it, they weren't in our footage. Apparently they were worried I had captured them on film doing bad drug things in the background of the scene from the balcony. Or worse, maybe I was spying on them. Yeah, big obvious American dude in Japan filming you doing your drug deal so he can rush back and inform the U.S. embassy and stop your foul deeds asap. yeah. Anyway, I found out that I had come close to really being hurt. A week later the Japanese news reported that a Swiss tourist in Shibuya had been stabbed by middle-eastern drug dealers who thought he was recording their activities with a viddy cam. All I can say is, yes, Japan is the safest country I've ever been to, but among foreigners, all bets are off and anything can happen, so watch your Ps and Qs and be friendly to the local foreign gangsters. Your kidney, liver, and vital intestines will thank you. tokyo plastic, hikikomori, adario strange, asian film, japanese hacker Tuesday, August 17, 2004
Some Hikikomori Pics
There are a bunch of photos out there of our movie activities with "Hikikomori: Tokyo Plastic", but right now things are a little too hectic to post them all, so here's just a taste. The first is a shot of the box office at the Uplink Theater in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan that night we screened the film. The second is a shot of our team took of a Kim's Video Store in New York City displaying the movie poster. No, there is no video or DVD out for the film just yet, but the nice people at Kim's Video are supporting us early on and we really appreciate it! tokyo plastic, hikikomori, adario strange, asian film, japanese hackerWednesday, August 04, 2004
Tokyo AftermathNow that we're back in new york, I wanted to thank everyone who came down to the first public screening of "Hikikomori: Tokyo Plastic" at the Uplink theater in Shibuya, Tokyo last Friday. The theater was almost completely full, the event went off perfectly. I'd like to thank the people at Uplink, especially Asai San for inviting us into his brand new facility. It was also nice to see some of you show up at the after party at club Womb. I'll probably have pics to post soon, as well as up and coming New York City dates for the film. Don't forget that we will be back in Tokyo later this year with a final edit of the film.I also spent most of this trip conducting in-depth interviews with psychiatric and mental health professionals for a documentary I am directing for a very dynamic film producer here in New York. I've seen some very odd institutions, met some interesting doctors, and gotten an entirely new perspective on human behaviour from these great minds. The actual documentary isn't about Japan, but the Japan portion of the film will figure in prominently. Stay tuned, I'll leak the name and details in the coming weeks. Aside from cool film stuff, this trip I: battled a superstrong gekko lizard in my room, was attacked by a tarantula (or a reasonable facsimile), experienced my first earthquake, got dissed by a cosplay person in harajuku, became lord of the flies...literally, had a shibuya restaurant owner tell me that the big 2 foot long rat casually running along the ceiling pipe was 'no big deal' in a shibuya restaurant, lost camera equipment in akihabara and had it returned unharmed, traveled the absolutely awesome Kamakura region, ran screaming from a japanese temple/cemetery in Nippori that was haunted, was stalked by a crazed gaijin for one hellish night, found the smallest bar in tokyo - which also happens to be the best (chandelier bar shibuya), walked in the shadow of roppongi hills...brrrrr, watched "The Excorcist" in Japanese--the power of christ compels you!, picked up a jimbe in Akasaka that I fully intend to wear on the streets of new york city unashamed and proud, consumed four kinds of tofu (???) in one sitting, accidentally pissed off several people I love, broke my japanese karaoke cherry, saw a woman in a kimono riding a Harley (yes, that'll be in a future movie of mine-guaranteed), discussed international gender politics with a random older Japanese woman on the JR train line to Shinjuku, and finally found my true Tokyo comfort level persona, as well as a few other meaningful emotions. Here's my roll call of people who made this recent Tokyo mission a pleasure, I want to thank these people from the bottom of my heart: Asai Takashi and the Uplink Crew, Traci Consoli, Rex Hayashi, Yoji, DJ Grinch, Sayaka Kubori, Ben, Greggman and the entire Thursday night game dude crew (I'm so jealous of you guys), Harvey, Harvey (the dude so nice you have to mention him twice), Masaki, Virg, Ikumi, Chiharu Nakaya, Chika Harada, Yuki Tanaka, Kohshiloh Yoshida, and Canadian Chris in Nippori. You guys all rock, thank you!tokyo plastic, hikikomori, adario strange, asian film, japanese hacker Friday, July 23, 2004

Tokyo AgainWe'll be returning to Tokyo again in the next couple of weeks in July. On the agenda? The Tokyo, Japan premiere of "Hikikomori: Tokyo Plastic" as well as some very important finishing shots for another film, a documentary (completely unconnected with the subject of hikikomori). I'll post specific dates and venue locations for the "Hikikomori" showings as soon as possible. Also, we'll be making brief stops to Nagoya and Osaka. If there are any venue owners/promoters in those areas interested in hosting a screening of the film, please drop us a line, we'd love to set something up.
